Composition in Red and Green

Description

Oil on canvas.

I'm not crazy about painting still life, but it's a valuable means to improve technical skill in paint-handling, and it can clear the mind sometimes, which is nice. It's actually a pretty relaxing way to work if one actually likes the setup in question. I rather liked this setup, so working on it wasn't bad. I may have to reshoot this photo sometime though. The glare kinda kills the painting, I think.

This looks good but, ah poop, the flash made things glary. Kinda distracting, but you knew that already.
Anyways, I especially like that shiny spool of ribbon(if that's what it is). Looks very smooth and soft. My eyes gravitate to the spool more, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on how you want to see the painting. I think it's fine. That bottle of wine is very well handled shinewise. Looks like glass, good job. I kinda loose focus when it comes to everything else, which seems to be a lil bland. But you know what? Sometimes that's the way things are in life. Sometimes things do seem bland next to something else, which might just happen to not be in the center of all things. It's just as realistic as any other portrayal of still life. Ah, I'm blathering again. Nice painting.
